About The Position

Persons in these positions normally work 1.7 to 3.5 hours per day during school session. Under direction of a school principal or other certificated employee, implements and oversees the clerical operation and maintenance of a school library and provides a welcoming environment for students; assists students in locating and selecting books; uses an automated library management system to process and maintain books and instructional media materials, primarily at the elementary level; and performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent diploma and some experience in the operation of a library or office.
  • Experience working with elementary aged students is highly desirable.
  • Experience in using a computerized library management system is highly desirable.
  • Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
  • All candidates must meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position. This can be met one of three ways: (1) Possession of an associate's degree or higher; (2) completion of 48 full semester units earned at an accredited college or university; (3) having a High School diploma or GED equivalent and taking and passing the ESSA exam.
  • Knowledge of library practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard library reference sources.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operation and related software.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Knowledge of correct labeling and shelving processes for fiction and nonfiction books and materials.
  • Knowledge of library inventory principles and practices in an automated environment.
  • Ability to learn and manage an automated school library with a moderate level of independence.
  • Ability to assist students in selecting appropriate books for their level of achievement.
  • Ability to assist students in the use of library resources and references.
  • Ability to train and supervise student and adult volunteers.
  • Ability to learn and apply library rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to provide a welcoming environment for students to develop an appreciation for literature and reading.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with elementary aged students is highly desirable.
  • Experience in using a computerized library management system is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students or teachers in locating and selecting books and using reference materials in a computerized library system.
  • Processes new books by entering data into an automated library management system, files catalog cards in manual systems, labels books according to designated reading levels, issues overdue notices.
  • Creates and updates bulletin board and other seasonal theme displays to emphasize new books and book jackets relative to current curriculum and calendar.
  • Contacts teachers and arranges schedule for classes to visit the library, with assistance from the principal.
  • Reads stories to students, as requested by teachers.
  • Trains and supervises student and adult volunteers who issue, shelve, label, and repair books and otherwise assist in operating the library, primarily on an automated library management system.
  • Maintains an ongoing inventory of books, weeding and discarding worn or unused books.
  • Assists in ordering library books and supplies.
  • Maintains library in a neat and orderly condition.
