Under the general direction of the Principals or Assistant Principals, the teacher is responsible for helping students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women. The Library Media Specialist should know how to quickly find resources, teach elementary students how to retrieve sources of information, and encourage reading and computer literacy. Knowledge of the library's content and how best to retrieve sources of information for students is the number one priority. Understanding information technology and how to use library resources in research is valuable knowledge that can be passed on to students. This role involves keeping up with information retrieval from internal and external sources, acting as a liaison for teachers for new book collections and literary resources, acquiring new or current books and media materials, and maintaining the library's collection. The specialist will inventory, weed, and catalog the library's holdings to ensure relevance. Some specialists may also serve as department chairs, team leaders, or building curriculum coordinators, and other duties may be assigned by the principal.
