About The Position

Under the supervision of the Library Director and Teen Services staff, the Library Intern will work on a connected learning project, assist with summer reading events, help patrons with library services, and contribute to the efficient operation of the library. This role involves creating a program, event, or resource based on the intern's interests, implementing it by the end of the internship, and advertising it through various channels. Additionally, the intern will provide customer service, perform clerical support, and assist with library operations.

Requirements

  • Currently Enrolled in High School.
  • Attends School, or lives, in the Umatilla School District.
  • Between the age of 14 and 17.
  • Knowledge of computers and common software operation.
  • Must pass a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Create a program, event, or resource that reflects the interest of the intern.
  • Work with the Library Director and Teen Services staff to implement the project.
  • Create flyers and advertise on social media and within the community.
  • Connect and partner with one organization or business in the community.
  • Implement project by the end of internship.
  • Assist patrons in applying for library membership.
  • Process membership applications and issue library cards.
  • Perform customer service both in person and via telephone in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Assist patrons with read-reference questions and reader advisory, bibliographic instruction and database searching.
  • Assist patrons with mechanical operations of library equipment.
  • Answer directional questions and refer patrons to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate library policies and procedures effectively.
  • Perform circulation desk procedures, such as checking in and checking out materials, registering patrons and collecting fines.
  • Check in deliveries of interlibrary loan materials.
  • Process, withdraw, repair, or recondition library materials.
  • Shelve library materials.
  • Assist with library programs and displays.
