About The Position

This position performs routine unskilled manual work in building and grounds maintenance. The role involves operating light equipment such as vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms. Responsibilities include cleaning floors, windows, and bathrooms, replacing bulbs and fixtures, and other routine building maintenance. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated through observation and inspection.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in general maintenance of facilities and buildings.
  • Valid N.C. driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
  • Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Ability to work productively without close supervision.
  • Ability to respond courteously to citizens and employees.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
  • Visual acuity to visually inspect small defects or parts, operate or inspect machines, use measurement devices, and determine the neatness and accuracy of work.
  • Stamina to work for extended periods, some of which may be in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains a schedule of routine janitorial and general maintenance work to keep up the appearance and safety of library facilities and grounds.
  • Performs custodial duties such as vacuuming carpets, cleaning and maintaining furniture, cleaning glass and counter areas, dusting shelves, emptying trash, straightening tables and chairs, cleaning restrooms, and damp or dry mopping.
  • Assists staff in the arrangement of furniture and equipment.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of cleaning equipment, janitorial, and other building supplies.
  • Runs errands pertaining to custodial duties.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on library facilities, buildings, grounds, and related equipment, including plumbing, electrical wiring, computer cabling, window panes, lights, and furniture.
  • Empties book drops in cooperation with other staff.
  • Works closely with the Friends of the Library moving, sorting, labeling, and storing donated books.
  • Assists in keeping sidewalks cleared of debris.
  • Sets up meeting rooms with table and chair arrangements for scheduled events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
