About The Position

The purpose of this job is to catalog, and process print and audiovisual materials for all Public Library locations.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of customer service, administrative/general office or related experience in a library setting is preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have dependable transportation.
  • A pre-employment criminal background check is required.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of the library and library practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the job of Library Cataloger.
  • Knowledge of MARC cataloging standards.
  • Knowledge of customer service practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the County.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer software consistent for this position.
  • Skill in analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures, and techniques for resolution of issues.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Skill in applying judgment and discretion in resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and /or technology.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.

  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Use and normal maintenance of office machines, (copier, computer, printer, etc.).
  • Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or MLS from an ALA accredited college or university preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service to internal and external customers; greets, receives, and screens visitors and customers; addresses and resolves customer questions as able and refers complex inquiries, requests, or complaints to appropriate staff.
  • Catalogs print and audiovisual materials using MARC standard, either copy or original cataloging.
  • Processes new materials and repairs items as needed.
  • Maintains all print material collections in the library. Assists supervisor in weeding and other collection management duties.
  • Assists patrons and staff members with finding materials. Answers questions about print materials.
  • Assists at public service desks as needed.
  • Attends regularly scheduled departmental and all-staff meetings, annual staff training day, and any additional mandatory meetings.
  • Maintains electronic and paper filing and record systems to provide easy access to records and information; provides retention of records as required by Department and County policies.
  • Other related work and special projects as assigned.
  • Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.
  • Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.
  • Demonstrates the organization’s Core Values and adherence to the Ethics policy.
