About The Position

Primarily responsible for providing library services to patrons at all library service desks. Work involves routine circulation, shelf maintenance, and clerical functions using an automated system. Duties include locating and checking materials in and out, providing information and technology assistance, registering new patrons, shelving library materials, handling money, inputting data, and assisting with special projects. Also required to make independent decisions as dictated by library policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of municipal library operations
  • Knowledge of integrated library management systems
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective interpersonal and working relationships with the public, organizations, and co-workers
  • Ability to work well with adults, and youth
  • Ability to understand and be sensitive to the needs of individuals of all backgrounds
  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical computations
  • Ability to provide customer service, including technology assistance
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to type accurately and demonstrate proficiency in using Microsoft Office products, financial transaction software, Web-based programs and the internet
  • Ability to assist patrons with a wide variety of operating systems, software, and devices
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service to library users at all public desks.
  • Registers library patrons.
  • Provides information and technology assistance to library users; troubleshoots equipment.
  • Manages daily cash and credit card transactions.
  • Promotes library programs and services by promoting upcoming events, directing patrons to the online calendar, and offering physical publicity materials.
  • Assists staff with special projects.
  • Answers the phone.
  • Shelves and shelf reads materials.
  • Advises and/or trains staff and volunteers performing related work; may participate in recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  • Processes and repairs library materials.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
  • Adheres to regular and prompt attendance.
  • Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
