About The Position

This is a part-time position (24 hours per week) at the Bluford Branch, located at 3050 Prospect Avenue, Kansas City, MO. 64128. The pay rate is $17.07 per hour. The library is currently hiring for two positions with different shift options. The role involves providing essential library services, assisting patrons with various resources, and performing related duties. Bluford Branch also functions as a United States Village Post Office, requiring employees to sell stamps and accept priority mail. The work environment is shared with co-workers and patrons in a diverse community. This job description is not exhaustive and duties may change.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.
  • Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.
  • Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level.
  • Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
  • Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 10-15 lbs.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Customer Service experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects fines and charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.
  • Maintains effective courteous working relationships with all library patrons and staff.
  • Assists patrons with use of library databases, computer equipment, and software.
  • Courteously answers telephone by identifying self and location, and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person.
  • Lifts, routes and shelves materials, which may weigh up to 35 pounds, from book bins and shelves.
  • Processes patrons' request material; prepares and sends Interlibrary Loan requests.
  • Performs other related work and as assigned, such as Kid’s café, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities developed and promoted by other Library colleagues.
  • At the Bluford branch, employees additionally sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.
