About The Position

Responsible for providing desk coverage and assistance to library internal and external customers, including but not limited to, circulation, program presentation, information, and computer assistance services. This role involves assisting and instructing library customers in person, over the telephone, or by electronic mail, and helping them utilize library equipment and services. Key duties include managing new customer registrations, updating accounts, processing returned and checked-out materials, collecting fees, organizing shelves, assisting with program preparation and promotion, and maintaining collections. The position also requires monitoring material conditions and performing minor repairs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience in library or related field, OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of development and activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.
  • Skill in moderate problem solving; identifying moderate-to-complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule including nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to work overtime, as required.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and instruction to library customers in person, over the telephone, or by electronic mail.
  • Assist and instruct customers in use of library equipment and services, including reader's advisory, basic reference searches, online catalog, MakerSpace, digital collections, public computers, printers, and other library machinery.
  • Complete registration for new library customers, update library accounts and check in returned materials and assesses, and check out library materials, as appropriate.
  • Collect fees and process payments for items; accept cash, check, or card payments, as needed.
  • Organize and straighten materials on the shelves and maintenance of collections; ensure items are in proper order according to the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Assist with preparation and promotion of programs, classes, and services; assist with program outreach, as needed.
  • Prepare publicity materials, displays and bulletin boards.
  • Monitor the conditions of returned material; repair materials and route to proper area and/or staff member, as applicable.
