About The Position

Kitsap Regional Library is seeking enthusiastic individuals for the role of Library Assistant at the Silverdale branch. This position focuses on providing excellent customer service, both internally and externally, within a positive and passionate team environment. The role involves a variety of circulation and customer service functions, including staffing the circulation desk, managing library materials, issuing library cards, handling patron accounts and fines, and assisting patrons directly. This position reports to the Public Services Supervisor. The library is recruiting for both a 20-hour per week and a 24-hour per week position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in a customer service environment
  • Ability to sort and file alphanumerically
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
  • Ability to navigate the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse audience
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to serve the public courteously
  • Ability to perform financial procedures using the ILS system
  • Ability to access and utilize staff Intranet resources
  • Ability to follow detailed written or verbal procedural instructions accurately, with willingness to seek clarification
  • Ability to acquire and effectively implement knowledge of library policies and procedures and to use independent judgment to resolve circulation and patron problems within established guidelines
  • Ability to work a schedule that may change periodically, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work collaboratively to create and maintain an inclusive environment where staff and patrons are respected and feel safe, supported and valued

Responsibilities

  • Administering patron accounts
  • Preparing financial reports
  • Providing direct assistance to patrons
  • Processing periodicals
  • Processing shipment and book drops
  • Assisting patrons with self-checkout machines
  • Answering questions in hold areas
  • Assisting patrons with basic reference questions and referring them to other qualified staff
  • Supporting the branch team
  • Responding to patron complaints or concerns
  • Assisting patrons using public computers, printers, and copier/fax machines
  • Elevating technical service issues via work orders
  • Promoting library programs, information, services, and materials
  • Assisting with displays and other library promotional and informational materials
  • Supporting library opening and closing processes
  • Attending branch meetings, workshops, and systemwide training sessions
  • Assisting with collection maintenance (weeding, light mending, updating labels)
  • Following library policies and procedures in case of facility or patron-related incidents
  • Assisting with training and programming
  • Maintaining a clean, welcoming, and safe library environment
  • Supporting volunteers
