About The Position

Shannon Library is seeking student workers to staff its Information & Service Desks for the 2026-2027 academic year. As the first point of contact for library users, the Information & Service Desk plays a key role in shaping visitors' experience of Shannon Library. This position provides customer service at assigned service points, primarily charging, discharging, and renewing library materials, with occasional special projects. Punctuality, attention to detail, and dependability are essential. This is a customer service role, so please highlight any relevant customer or visitor service experience on your resume.

Requirements

  • Current undergrad UVA student.
  • Federal Work-Study eligible.
  • Comfortable with data entry and standard office software.
  • Able to learn the Library of Congress call number system.
  • Able to work independently, proactively, and within established policies and guidelines.
  • Reliable in a customer/visitor service environment.
  • Must be able to read printed labels.
  • Must be able to push a full book cart and lift up to 15 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Service Desks.
  • Checkout, discharge, and renew library materials for patrons.
  • Sort, deliver, and retrieve library materials within the building.
  • Answer basic information, direction, circulation, and library policy questions.
  • Help patrons locate materials in the stacks and provide basic assistance with copiers and printers.
  • Assist patrons with library request forms.
  • Assist in opening or closing of the library during the first or last shift.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly working space.
  • Must be able to work weekends and during exam week periods.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • If unable to work an assigned shift, you must be able to find a substitute for that shift.

Benefits

  • Compensation: $14.53/hour.
