About The Position

This part-time position involves providing circulation and reference services to the public in a professional and customer-focused environment. The role is performed under the direct supervision of the Branch Manager, with additional guidance from the Library Director and Assistant Director. The schedule is an average of 14.5 hours per week, with a regular schedule of Tuesday through Thursday and every Saturday. Additional hours may be available on a fill-in basis as needed.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent with some experience working with the public.
  • Basic clerical skills, including computer usage, keyboarding and filing.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn in a short period of time, the software programs utilized by the library.
  • Ability to become familiar with books, authors and reference materials used in the library.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with the staff and the general public.
  • Ability to gain access to all library materials on public shelves and in storage, and to lift materials from the lower levels up to a height of 8½ feet.
  • Must pass a criminal background check as a condition of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping the library open during scheduled hours.
  • Assisting patrons with selection and the checking in and out of library materials.
  • Responding to public inquiries over the phone and performing receptionist duties while on circulation desk.
  • Providing patrons with information and reference services, referring requests to headquarters when necessary.
  • Registering new library patrons and maintaining files for patron registration and circulation.
  • Collecting service charges for lost and damaged materials.
  • Unpacking and distributing library materials and communications received in courier tubs.
  • Verifying and sending inter-library loan and reference questions.
  • Shelving library materials.
  • Returning rotation materials to headquarters.
  • "Weeding" paperbacks and/or hardcover books.
  • Picking up mail at the post office.
  • Assisting in planning and facilitating adult and children's programs.
  • Attending staff meetings and workshops as requested by the Director.
  • Maintaining a good relationship in the community and promoting the library and its services.
  • Working with city officials and community groups on matters concerning the building and library services.
  • Performing some janitorial services, including snow shoveling.
  • Performing other work as required.
  • Observing all Watonwan County safety and health rules and applying the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties.
