About The Position

Massachusetts College of Art and Design's Morton R. Godine Library is committed to upholding the mission of the College through free and open access to the library's collections and services. Our exceptional collections, dedicated staff, and welcoming space enrich MassArt. The Library Assistant II serves as a member of the Technical Services Team, works closely with Public Services, and occasionally supports Archives and Visual Resources. Responsibilities may change in response to library priorities as established through regular library-wide planning and staffing needs. Supervision Exercised: Student Workers Position is governed by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods used in performing library research and bibliographic searches.
  • Experience with online library systems, preferably with a cataloging module.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace or Microsoft Teams.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility appropriate for a dynamic work setting, including schedule changes related to academic calendars and institutional needs.
  • Physical ability to move packages and shelve books and other library materials.
  • At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time paraprofessional experience as a library assistant.
  • An Associate's degree or higher may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with bibliographic utilities such as OCLC; experience with FOLIO.
  • Familiarity with Title II accessibility standards and tools.
  • Experience working in an academic library environment.
  • Experience working with and appreciation for working with patrons from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to cataloging workflow by checking holdings, creating short records, performing copy cataloging, assisting in materials processing, and processing weeded materials.
  • Facilitates workflow between circulation and technical services.
  • Helps facilitate the processing of damaged, lost and withdrawn items working closely with Public Services staff. Assists with managing missing items workflow. Provides information to the Collection Development team.
  • Assists with catalog cleanup.
  • Prepares damaged items for bindery and assists with enclosures and in-house repairs
  • Creates metadata for non-traditional collections, such as zines, record albums, and digital assets. May work with the Visual Resources Librarian and Archivist on projects and collection maintenance.
  • Provides reference and public services assistance during designated reference shifts and as needed.
  • Collects statistical data as needed.
  • With other morning shift staff, the library opens as needed and provides morning desk coverage. May on occasion close the library.
  • Collaborates on policy and procedure drafting and refinement.
  • Coordinates periodic collection inventories.
  • Serves as back-up support for library departments and assists with projects in other areas of the library as needed.
