About The Position

Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, seeks (2) candidates for a full-time Library Access Services Specialist I. This is a Bargaining, non-exempt, grade 17 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. This position is eligible for telework (1) day a week, and is based on operational need. Telework eligibility and total days per week are subject to change based on the operational needs of the applicable unit/area. Montgomery College does not currently offer voluntary remote work, or withhold payroll taxes for states outside of its tax reciprocity agreements. As a result, employees must reside in, and perform any approved telework from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania. Employees residing in other states at the time of hire are not eligible for telework until they have secured a permanent residence in one of the states listed above. The work schedules: (you may apply to one or both positions) Position (R7613): Tuesday – Thursday 9:30am – 6:00pm, Friday – Saturday 8:30am – 5:00pm. Position (R7594): Monday – Thursday 1:30pm – 10:00pm, Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm. Job Summary The Library Access Services Specialist I provide front-line support to students, faculty, staff, and community members using the library. This position helps users find library materials, access online resources, use technology, and navigate library services. The Specialist also supports the daily operation of the library and works with other College departments, including IT, Facilities, and Public Safety, when assistance is needed.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree.
  • One year of experience working in a library, OR two years of administrative support or customer service experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience that provides the knowledge and skills needed to perform the essential duties of the position may also be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service at the library service desk and assist users in person and virtually.
  • Help users locate materials and use the library catalog, databases, and other online resources.
  • Answer questions and connect users with the appropriate library or College department when additional assistance is needed.
  • Assist with computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, assistive technology, and other library equipment.
  • Troubleshoot basic hardware, software, and technology issues.
  • Check library materials in and out, update users records, and follow up on overdue materials.
  • Support library services such as course reserves, fines and fees, interlibrary loans, intercampus loans, periodicals, stacks maintenance, displays and events, and emergency preparedness.
  • Cross-train in different library service areas to provide coverage when needed.
  • Create and maintain displays highlighting library resources, services, holidays, heritage months, and topics of interest to the College community.
  • Track circulation and other library service statistics.
  • Help resolve customer service concerns involving library accounts, services, or use of library spaces.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and securing the library.
  • Help oversee library operations, facilities, and safety during early morning, evening, or weekend hours when senior Access Services staff or supervisors are not present.
  • Report facilities and safety concerns to the appropriate College department.
  • Follow College policies related to confidentiality, FERPA, copyright, and appropriate use of technology.
  • Assist with annual testing of library management system software upgrades.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
