About The Position

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is hiring a Librarian focused on the history of North Carolina, Mecklenburg County, and its municipalities. Reporting to the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room Manager, the position works closely with Archives and Special Collections staff to provide reference services, develop adult and teen programs (and, less often, children’s programs), and recommend additions to the collections. Programming on local history and culture at the Main Library is critical to the role; public-library programming experience is preferred. Work includes answering reference, research, homework, and readers’ advisory requests; explaining library services, policies, and procedures; developing and promoting collections; and supporting programs and classes for lifelong learning, early literacy, educational support, and workforce development. The role also provides technology assistance and supports job seekers with resumes, cover letters, opportunity research, and relevant job listings and resources. The role is based at the Library Administration Center temporarily until the Main Library opens, and then at the Main Library. The position is salaried and exempt. Applicants must have at least two years of public library experience and a master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution. North Carolina Public Library certification is required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
