About The Position

Fort Bend County is seeking a Librarian II for its Youth Services department in Fulshear. This role involves collection development for young adults, recommending materials, preparing orders, and assisting branches with managing damaged and outdated materials. The librarian will direct support staff in processing and data entry for young adult materials, conduct meetings with YA representatives from branch locations, provide support, and monitor collections and programming. They will also assist in developing goals, policies, and procedures for YA collections and services. The position requires developing, planning, and conducting programs and activities to encourage library use among young adults aged 14-18, and evaluating these services in conjunction with the Programming Manager and Youth Services Coordinator. The librarian will create and promote an environment that attracts young adults to the collection, design bookmarks and displays, and assist branch YA representatives with collections, programs, and spaces. Additionally, they will promote and represent young adult services and the library to the community, utilize various techniques like book talks and competitions to engage young adults, and collaborate with schools and other agencies serving this demographic. The role includes providing information services, potentially instructing young adults in basic computer and research skills, and offering reference and reader's advisory services. Maintaining communication with other library departments, attending conferences and trainings, and keeping statistical records are also key responsibilities. The position also includes participating in emergency management activities during local states of disaster as directed.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school.
  • 2 years job related experience; post MLS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts regular meetings with YA representatives from branch locations, provides support, monitors collections and programming.
  • Assists with developing goals, policies and procedures for YA collections and services.
  • Develops, plans and/or conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage library use by young adults ages 14-18.
  • Evaluates services to young adults in conjunction with the Programming Manager and Youth Services Coordinator.
  • Creates and promotes an environment that attracts and invites young adults to use the collection.
  • Creates bookmarks and displays for young adult areas.
  • Assists branch YA representatives in planning collections, programs and spaces for young adults.
  • Promotes, publicizes and represents young adult services and the library to the community.
  • Utilizes a variety of techniques (book talks, competitions, etc.) to encourage young adults.
  • Collaborates with schools and other agencies providing services to young adults.
  • Provides a variety of information services to young adults.
  • May instruct young adults in basic computer use and basic research skills.
  • May provide reference and reader’s advisory to young adults.
  • Maintains communication and good working relationship with other library departments (PIO, Youth Services, Programming, Staff Development, etc.)
  • Attends conferences, trainings and workshops as appropriate.
  • May attend monthly collection development and database meetings.
  • Keeps statistical records of unit activities and prepares appropriate reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
