About The Position

The Public Library of Brookline is seeking a highly skilled, motivated and patron-focused Librarian to join our team in the Collection Services department. This position involves performing administrative, direct service, and professional work in classifying, cataloging, and processing print and non-print materials for the library. The Librarian II - Collection Services will be responsible for processing and maintaining the Library’s ‘Library of Things’ collection.

Requirements

  • Master's of Library and Information Science degree
  • Supplemented by additional training in library technology
  • Two -three years of experience in library operations
  • Familiarity with Dewey classification, AACR, Resource Description and Access (RDA), descriptive cataloging practices, authority control, and serial control.
  • Familiarity with Dewey classification, OCLC MARC records.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of foreign languages in Spanish, Chinese, or Russian is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Processes and catalogs library materials.
  • Verifies cataloging and classifies all types of library materials for the general collection, including world languages and library of things.
  • Attaches barcodes and branch designations to library materials.
  • Develops one or more collections; evaluates patron recommendations, selects new materials and shares this information electronically with other staff; replaces older or damaged materials; determines which materials are no longer needed based on professional criteria.
  • Maintains budget for collection.
  • Reads professional reviews from various sources.
  • Verifies that item records will be attached to the correct bibliographic records.
  • Exchanges materials and information with the Minuteman Library Network (MLN) centralized cataloging department.
  • Works with MLN to ensure the library complies with network lending agreements and metadata standards.
  • Prepares continuations, adding, withdrawing, and transferring items which are standing orders and come annually or more frequently.
  • Searches OCLC to find a matching record for specialized collections and then creates brief records in database and classifies.
  • Checks in and distributes items from processing.
  • Assigns and reviews work of Library Assistants and volunteers.
  • Reclassifies specific areas of collections to bring in line with Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal System.
  • Does original cataloging of Brookline Room materials, and creates brief records in MLN database, when needed.
  • Handles serials record maintenance and cataloging for Reference Department staff and library branches.
  • Train and provide limited supervision to employees and/or volunteers in various tasks.
  • Provides information and assistance to library patrons as necessary.
  • May be assigned to reference or other public service desk as needed.
  • Changes or delete records in foreign language databases as needed.
  • Performs similar or related work as required.
  • Serves as Person in Charge as assigned.
  • Has sole charge of the building and all staff working at that particular time/day.
