About The Position

Spirit Defense is seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and innovative students to join their 2027 intern program. This role is at Spirit AeroSystems, Inc., a subsidiary of The Boeing Company, supporting Spirit’s Commercial Business Units. Spirit Commercial designs and builds commercial aerostructures. Spirit Defense teams apply innovative engineering, advanced manufacturing, and rapid prototyping to solve complex challenges across the defense and space industries. Engineers and business professionals work on products and technologies that support critical missions and help shape the future of aerospace. As a Spirit Defense intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced professionals on real-world aerospace challenges. During your summer internship, you will have the opportunity to work directly with a mentor, gain firsthand exposure to aerospace products, manufacturing operations, engineering processes, and business systems, collaborate with engineering and business leaders, build a professional network, and develop the skills and experience to launch your career in the aerospace and defense industry.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate or graduate ABET-accredited engineering program
  • Ability to work full-time during Summer 2027
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must be able to work 100% onsite in Wichita, KS.

  • Majoring in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or other related engineering fields
  • The ability to relocate and work onsite

Responsibilities

  • Support aerospace production and program execution by working directly with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and other cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues affecting defense and space products.
  • Evaluate nonconforming conditions, interpret engineering requirements, develop technically sound dispositions, and support timely solutions that maintain product safety, quality, and mission requirements.
  • Investigate production nonconformances and support engineering dispositions or repair solutions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, models, specifications, and design requirements to resolve shop-floor technical issues.
  • Coordinate with design, structural analysis, manufacturing, quality, and program teams on production solutions.
  • Support root-cause investigations, corrective actions, technical documentation, and continuous improvement activities.
