About The Position

The successful candidate will support 2SLGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness or precarious housing in the Hamilton community. All duties are performed within a multidisciplinary team. The 2SLGBTQ+ Mental Health Clinician will address a significant gap for 2SLGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness, precarious housing, and significant mental health and substance use needs. This position will provide clinical interventions, including evidence-informed therapeutic interventions and advocacy to this population. The target population for this program are youth within the Hamilton community between the ages of 16-21 who identify as 2SLGBTQ+, are living with mental health and substance use needs, and are experiencing homelessness and/or precarious housing.

Requirements

  • Lived/living experience of a 2SLGBTQ+ identity
  • Have an awareness of some of the issues that impact 2SLGBTQ+ youth with intersecting identities (e.g., homelessness, mental health, racialized identities, financial instability, developmental or intellectual disorders, etc.)
  • A combination of education (BSW, or equivalent) and experience supporting young people with their mental health and/or substance use
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development, and adolescent and emerging adult mental health and substance use
  • Assessment, counseling, and case management skills
  • Knowledge of community resources and services in the Hamilton area, social and environmental determinants of health, evidence-informed practices in supporting adolescent mental health
  • Ability to develop and facilitate programs/groups for youth and facilitate staff training
  • Ability to work in the community (various sites, mobile, etc.) to meet the needs of youth
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, computer, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certificate
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Commitment to anti-racist/anti-oppressive practice and to the mission and values of Good Shepherd Centres

  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual clinical care to clients with significant mental health and addiction issues through the use of evidence-based modalities (DBT, CBT, EFFT, CPS, MI, ACT, etc.)
  • Make referrals to connect clients to a wide variety of community programs and services
  • Provide support and psycho-education to youth accessing this program, as well as connections to consulting psychology and psychiatry depending on need and the youth's goals
  • Work with individuals to create comprehensive mental health assessments and individualized treatment plans focusing on strengths, capacities, and needs
  • Case conferences/consultation with other treatment providers and community partners
  • Build staff and program capacity to better support youth who identify as 2SLGBTQ+
  • Complete all required documentation related to the clinical care of clients
  • Other duties as assigned
