About The Position

Under the supervision of Wellness Department leadership, the Group Exercise Instructor provides leadership, guidance, and motivation to members and guests in a group exercise setting. The instructor leads safe, effective, and engaging classes that may include cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and flexibility. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe class environment, including proper care of equipment, sound systems, and the exercise space. Requirements

  • Current Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications required, or must obtain within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Group Exercise certification from a nationally recognized organization (ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM, NETA, or equivalent) or specialty certification required.
  • Strong observation and risk-management skills, with the ability to enforce safety guidelines and follow YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Visual and auditory ability to recognize and respond to emergencies, along with the physical ability to act quickly when necessary.
  • Physical ability to lead group exercise classes and demonstrate movements safely and effectively.
  • Excellent customer service and hospitality skills with the ability to build positive relationships with members and guests.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and fitness levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience leading group fitness classes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead safe, engaging, and effective group exercise classes that accommodate a variety of fitness levels and abilities.
  • Provide outstanding hospitality to all members and guests by building professional relationships, addressing questions and concerns, and helping connect participants with appropriate YMCA programs and services.
  • Arrive before the scheduled start of class to prepare the space, set up equipment, greet participants, and assist new members in becoming comfortable with the class format.
  • Remain after class as needed to return equipment, answer participant questions, and restore the exercise area to YMCA standards.
  • Wear the designated YMCA uniform and begin each class with a brief introduction outlining the workout and any important safety information.
  • Demonstrate and clearly explain proper exercise technique, offering appropriate modifications and progressions to support participant safety and success.
  • Monitor participants throughout class, ensuring exercises are performed safely and adjusting instruction to meet the fitness level of the group.
  • Ensure that CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications stay current by renewing biannually.
  • Follow policies and procedures regarding social media, ClubConnect, Paycom, etc.
  • Utilize Y360 to take attendance, secure a qualified substitute, and complete additional job requirements.
  • Support the promotion of YMCA programs, classes, and special events to encourage member engagement and participation.

Instructors are expected to fulfill all pre-class and post-class responsibilities associated with their role during the compensated time period below: 30-minute class: Paid for 45 minutes (0.75 hours) 45-minute class: Paid for 1 hour (1.0 hour) 60-minute class: Paid for 1.25 hours
