This State Counsel position is based in our Sacramento, CA Legislative/Regulatory office, part of the Corporate Law Division of State Farm’s Law Department. Leadership in Action: Represent State Farm before regulators, guide responses to examinations, and support business units with rate filings and complaints — your legal expertise will be central to our success.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school with outstanding academic credentials.
  • Active law license in at least one state and in good standing with the bar.
  • Ability to obtain permission to practice law in California as a Registered In-House Counsel (RIHC) if not already licensed in California.
  • A proactive, preventative approach to lawyering, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality legal advice.
  • Demonstrated agility in learning new areas and a passion for continuous professional growth.
  • Proven team player who excels in collaborating with diverse stakeholders in complex, fast-paced environments.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. immediately; sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in one or more of the following: government relations, legislative drafting/advocacy, regulatory law.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the company’s government relations across multiple states.
  • Monitor and influence legislative and regulatory activities across multiple states.
  • Build relationships with and utilize lobbyists, trade associations, and external partners.
  • Collaborate closely with our Public Policy team and grassroots functions to craft innovative policy solutions.
  • Engage employees and agents on critical business issues.
  • Represent State Farm before regulators.
  • Guide responses to examinations.
  • Support business units with rate filings and complaints.

Benefits

  • Compensation is based on a standard 38:45-hour work week.
  • Potential starting salary range: $151,000.00 - $220,000.00
  • Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience.
  • High end of the range limited to applicants with significant relevant experience.
