About The Position

Representative Andrea Valderrama is recruiting for a full-time Legislative & Community Affairs Director to serve the people of House District 47. The Oregon Legislature is a fast-paced work environment that requires an experienced Legislative & Community Affairs Director, well-versed in managing competing deadlines and priorities with a high level of detail and a commitment to diversity, racial equity, and inclusion. If you enjoy public policy creation and are experienced with the legislative process, including development of policy campaigns and strategies, coalition and workgroup engagement, and relationship building, and are well-versed in strategic communications, this position might just be for you! You would take on a wide range of responsibilities, including messaging, bill analysis, legislative research, policy analysis, and constituent services while assisting with the day-to-day activities of Representative Valderrama’s office. Representing House District 47 requires thorough knowledge of the district's conditions, issues, community groups, and key influencers. You will strategically build and strengthen coalitions and community relations and collaborate with directly impacted communities to draft key messaging, communications, and correspondence. This is a full-time, limited-duration position beginning in November 2026 and ending in July 2026. During Oregon legislative sessions, staff work in the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Oregon. Flexibility to work non-traditional office hours, including nights and weekends, and willingness to travel within Oregon will be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) to five (5) years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position may be considered.

  • Demonstrated experience and fluency with the following software: OLIS, Google Docs, Outlook Teams, and Zoom
  • Knowledge of current policy conversations and legislative issues relevant to Oregon and the district

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Member in efforts to advance the policy agenda and legislative goals of the office.
  • Develops and implements legislative strategies.
  • Provides counsel, guidance, and feedback on legislative and policy decisions.
  • Monitors committee hearings and floor debates and reports legislative action or developments.
  • Drafting letters, speeches, talking points, and testimony.
  • Researching bills, policies, current laws, and topics.
  • Works with legislative counsel to draft or amend legislation.
  • Attends and staffs committees, work groups, task forces, meetings, tours, and other events on behalf of the office.
  • Contacts and arranges for speakers, presenters, and witnesses.
  • Schedules and coordinates meetings, town halls, and other events.
  • Arranges travel and lodging accommodations.
  • Interfaces with the general public, constituents, lobbyists, business leaders, other legislators, legislative staff, and interest groups to understand issues, draft legislation, and help get legislation passed and signed into law.
  • Provides responsive constituent services, such as tracking and assisting with responses to constituent communications, acting as a liaison to constituents, and helping to provide constituents with resources and solutions.
  • Manages external communications, including social media accounts, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Formulates and executes communication plans to ensure constituents understand the work being done.
  • Interfaces with the media.
  • Manages the day-to-day office activities, including clerical tasks, record-keeping, research, and report preparation.
  • Acts as the primary contact for all visitors and answers phone and email.
