Join our Government Law & Policy Team as a Legislative Assistant supporting our National Security Group located in our Washington, D.C. office. We are seeking a skilled professional with 2-3 years of federal policy experience and a demonstrated interest in defense and national security matters. The ideal candidate possesses strong problem-solving abilities, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in every task. Position Summary The Defense Legislative Assistant will provide essential research, administrative, and scheduling support to a fast-paced and busy team and will play an active role in supporting client advocacy efforts before Congress and federal agencies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently while maintaining strict confidentiality. Candidate should also be flexible to work overtime as needed. Schedule hours: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience, including on Capitol Hill or within the federal government.
  • Knowledge of the legislative process and relevant lobbying resources.
  • Ability to monitor and succinctly summarize Congressional committee hearings.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) are required and familiarity with legislative research tools and AI-enabled research.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated interest in defense and national security matters.
  • Experience with the Department of War, Department of Veterans Affairs, and/or Congressional Defense Committees is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research on legislative issues, bills, and policy proposals, including synthesizing complex statutory and regulatory developments into clear, actionable analysis.
  • Track the progress of legislation, committee hearings, and other activities, providing updates, summaries, and detailed memos.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to achieve legislative policy goals, including identifying relevant stakeholders, monitoring engagement opportunities, and supporting outreach efforts.
  • Contribute to the preparation of practice group deliverables, including legislative forecasts, end-of-session summaries, policy briefings, and other written materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Maintain and update internal legislative tracking systems and client-related information, including distribution lists and contact databases used to support client communications and reporting.
  • Manage attorney/director workloads by screening/reviewing emails, phone calls, and correspondence.
  • Coordinate and schedule internal/external meetings, prepare meeting materials, and draft agendas.
  • Participate in meetings to take notes, track action items, and support team and client objectives.
  • Assist in managing client relationships and organizing client-focused events, meetings, and fundraisers.
  • Coordinate business development initiatives with the marketing department.
