Legal Product Builder

Carta•San Francisco, CA
•$204,000 - $240,000

About The Position

As a Legal Product Builder, you will sit at the cutting edge of building technology around the practice of law. You will build AI-powered legal products alongside engineers and product managers, bringing deep legal expertise into the product development process to help turn complex legal work into scalable, agent-driven experiences. You will translate legal judgment into systems by breaking down legal processes like contract review and compliance into the decisions, rules, workflows, exceptions, and escalation points an AI agent needs to navigate. You will teach our agents what "good" looks like by developing examples, evaluation criteria, test cases, and feedback loops that help our legal agents produce accurate, useful, and trustworthy work. You will evaluate and improve agent performance by testing against real-world scenarios, identifying where reasoning or outputs fall short, diagnosing failure modes, and partnering with engineers to improve them. You will also anticipate ambiguity, edge cases, conflicting information, and situations requiring human judgment, and determine how our products should handle them. Additionally, you will prototype new legal capabilities by using AI tools directly to experiment with prompts, workflows, and agent behavior, moving from an idea to a working prototype before or alongside engineering to shape what we build next.
