About The Position

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Director’s Office / Office of Legal Affairs. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) is dedicated to enhancing the health, well-being, and self-reliance of all Montanans. Within this mission, the Legal Operations Officer is a pivotal leader, directly supporting the Chief Legal Counsel and Deputy Chief Legal Counsel. This role is critical for ensuring the fiscal integrity, operational efficiency, and overall sound business management of the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA). This position holds direct operational responsibility for workflow management, service-request tracking, budget and fiscal operations, case management systems administration, and administrative staff supervision. The Legal Operations Officer (LOO) will drive operations performance improvement, mitigate operational risks, and optimize resource allocation to achieve the Department’s legal service delivery objectives across all practice groups and core divisions. The Legal Operations Officer reports directly to the Chief Legal Counsel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Management, or related field.
  • Three or more years of work experience in operations management, legal operations, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of legal office operations, case management practices, and legal service delivery models
  • Knowledge of public administration including budget processes, fiscal management, and procurement rules.
  • Leadership ability to guide teams and drive operational excellence.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing high-profile, sensitive, or controversial issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of management and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Prior experience as part of a legal office team is a priority selection criterion.
  • Prior experience as a paralegal or legal administrative assistant is highly desired.
