About The Position

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Office Assistant in the Children, Youth, and Families Division. This position is located in Tumwater, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). The Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) is comprised of 34 attorneys and 32 professional staff who together provide legal advice and representation to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). Staff in each Attorney General’s Office location handle litigation for DCYF, and the CYF Division has the responsibility for doing so locally, as well as coordinating this work for the AGO statewide and advising DCYF leadership. We are looking for a Legal Office Assistant to join our team and provide essential services to families in need of support with the safety and care of their children. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the Juvenile Litigation section while developing valuable skills in legal support and office administration. As a Legal Office Assistant, you will engage in a high volume of clerical and legal tasks within a dynamic and very fast-paced environment. This work encompasses a variety of subjects, including juvenile dependency and program-wide cases, which can significantly impact statewide budgets and programs. Given the responsibilities of this position, the Legal Office Assistant will not be able to participate in a hybrid remote schedule. However, we offer alternative, flexible scheduling options that promote a work-life balance. As a Legal Office Assistant, you will provide general clerical support and some legal assistance to the Juvenile Litigation section, including but not limited to: Processing the section’s daily mail Carefully preparing and processing a large volume of outgoing mail, which includes sorting, addressing, and packaging each item to ensure timely and accurate delivery. Performing data entry into our case management system. Requesting and tracking the receipt of certified court orders. Handling in-person court filings and mail deliveries as requested. Archiving both physical and electronic files. Disassembling trial notebooks after the completion of trials/hearings. Additionally, our Legal Office Assistant also provides backup support to the division's Administrative Legal Office Assistant. This support includes tasks such as: Receiving and sorting division’s daily mail. Answering and screening phone calls. Processing supply orders and managing the division’s inventory. Process purchasing documents, invoices, vouchers, travel arrangements, and other administrative requests in accordance with agency procedures. Maintaining the division's devices. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of six months of experience in a legal office environment.
  • One year of legal office experience.
  • A combination of two years of college education and/or relevant experience.
  • A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in multitasking and thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in managing both short-term and long-term projects.
  • A collaborative attitude as a team player.
