About The Position

The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) is seeking up to four paid legal interns for Summer 2027. These internships are fully remote, requiring a 37.5-hour per week commitment for 10 weeks. NHeLP is a national legal and policy advocacy nonprofit founded in 1969, dedicated to protecting and advancing the health rights of low-income and underserved individuals and families. The organization works to enhance equitable access to quality health care and protect legal rights through advocacy, education, and litigation. NHeLP operates through three strategy areas: Federal Advocacy Strategy Area (FASA), Enforcement and Litigation Strategy Area (ELSA), and California Advocacy Strategy Area (CASA). Interns will be primarily based in one strategy area but will have opportunities to collaborate across the organization. NHeLP is committed to health equity and fostering an inclusive organizational environment.

Requirements

Law students who will be between their second and third years of law school during Summer 2027 (i.e., “rising 3Ls”).
Students in dual degree programs (e.g., J.D. and M.P.H.) are considered, but must have completed at least two years of law school.
Demonstrated commitment to public interest work, public health, poverty law (e.g. Medicaid, SNAP), and/or civil rights.
Interest in working toward the expansion and protection of health care access for low-income and underserved populations (e.g. the Affordable Care Act (-ACA)).

Responsibilities

Contribute to legal and/or policy analysis and development of health care policy, particularly with regard to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
Research novel areas of health law and draft legal and policy memoranda and publications.
Assist in responding to requests for legal and policy analysis from advocates around the country.
Gain exposure to high impact litigation and/or policy analysis.
Assist with drafting comments on federal regulations and state Medicaid demonstration projects.
Monitor and analyze state and federal legislation and administrative policies.
Participate in state and national coalition strategy meetings.
Assist with the production of substantive manuals, guides, and issue briefs for use by legal advocates.
Assist with production of blog posts, presentations, and other materials for broader audiences, including policymakers and public health officials.
Assist with research and drafting of litigation materials for use in state and federal court proceedings.
