About The Position

This is a 14-month term position starting in September, reporting to the Executive Director & Counsel. The incumbent will provide legal advice, expertise, and a range of legal services to the University, with a primary focus on general corporate/commercial law. Key areas include the purchase of goods and services, provision of services, institutional and industry collaborations, non-research funding, and non-disclosure agreements. The role also involves proactively advising on legal developments, managing legal and contractual obligations, performing risk management, reviewing commercial transactions, and conducting legal research. The position supports the University's legal group and internal stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of law degree (LL.B) and/or juris doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in legal practice.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with corporate/commercial, intellectual property, and privacy law.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing and negotiating contracts in a complex environment.
  • Experience working simultaneously on a variety of complex projects with established deadlines and ad hoc requests.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical, interpretative and research skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Highly motivated with proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, meet tight deadlines and perform confidently under pressure and with changing priorities.
  • Ability to proactively identify potential issues, gather and organize relevant information and devise solutions and action plans.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, tact and ability to positively represent the University at all times.
  • Able to work cooperatively and collegially with all components of the University constituents.

Nice To Haves

  • In-house legal experience is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of the University environment and experience working within a University or post-secondary education or other public sector environment is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice, expertise, and a range of legal services across the University.
  • Focus on general corporate/commercial law, including purchase of goods and services, provision of services, institutional and industry collaborations, non-research funding, and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Advise proactively on developments in relevant statutes, regulations, policies, and case law.
  • Identify and advise on legal exposures, risks, and legal challenges.
  • Support the University’s broader legal group and internal stakeholders.
  • Negotiate, maintain, and monitor the legal and contractual obligations of the University.
  • Perform legal and reputational risk management activities.
  • Perform commercial transaction/documentary review.
  • Perform legal research.
