About The Position

The City of Windsor is seeking a Legal Assistant to provide confidential clerical and legal assistance to the Legal Department. This temporary full-time position reports to the Deputy City Solicitor and involves a range of administrative and legal support duties. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public and staff. Requirements

  • University degree in Paralegal or Office Administration - Legal or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of one (1) year of experience gained in a legal office performing hands-on transactional work; OR Post secondary school Community College diploma in Paralegal or Office Administration - Legal or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of two (2) years of experience gained in a legal office performing hands-on transactional work; OR Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus one (1) year of post secondary courses in Paralegal or Office Administration - Legal or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of four (4) years of experience gained in a legal office performing hands-on transactional work; OR Ontario Secondary School Graduation diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of six (6) years of experience gained in a legal office performing hands-on transactional work
  • Extensive working knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft suite of programs including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Minimum typing speed of 40 wpm

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work
  • Prior experience using Teraview on a regular basis in the past six months
  • Prior municipal experience
  • Experience with litigation and tribunals and processes related to each

Responsibilities

  • Providing confidential clerical and legal assistance to the Department
  • Providing administrative support and general office work pertaining to clerical and administrative needs of the department in general
  • Typing confidential assignments and reports
  • Answering telephone inquiries
  • Filing
  • Preparing court and legal documents
  • Preparing real estate documents and processing purchase and sale transactions
  • Preparing by-laws, contracts, leases, agreements, expropriation documents
  • Processing and depositing cheques
  • Communicating with the public and fellow staff in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Displaying adaptability, working independently, giving attention to detail, following-up and using organizational skills and focusing on delivering excellent customer service
  • Performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program
  • Performing other related duties as required
