About The Position

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Social & Health Services Section of the Tacoma Division. This position is located in Tacoma, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). The Legal Assistant 1 position is a great place to begin your career in the legal field at the AGO. In a legal setting and under close supervision, this position independently performs a variety of general and complex clerical tasks in addition to basic technical legal assignments.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment
  • Two years of legal office experience
  • A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience
  • A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study
  • A valid non-probationary Washington State Driver's License is required for this position in order to lawfully operate state vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close litigation case files
  • Accurately perform case docketing functions and data entry into legal databases
  • Manage filing, storage, and organization of electronic case files
  • Facilitate retrieval of archived physical files from the state archives, maintain a record of chain of custody for retrieved case folders, and ensure their timely return to state archives once the physical files are no longer required
  • Prepare, finalize for signature, and file legal documents with the proper authority
  • Prepare basic legal correspondence with clients and others requiring knowledge of legal terminology, policies, and procedures
  • Monitor electronic mailboxes per division protocols and policies
  • Periodically cover front desk duties, such as answering phone calls, helping the public, scheduling conference rooms/vehicle reservations, handling large print projects, processing and routing all incoming mail and legal messenger deliveries, etc.
  • Log, prepare, and maintain record of invoices for litigation costs
  • Courier service to Pierce and Kitsap County courthouses
