About The Position

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Labor and Personnel Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). The AGO provides a workplace that is understanding of work-life balance and promotes advancement by offering a wide variety of professional development and growth opportunities. The Labor and Personnel Division represents and advises all state agencies and most colleges and universities on labor and employment issues, including labor negotiations and arbitrations, anti-discrimination laws, wage laws, employee discipline, public disclosure laws, and state and federal family and medical leave laws. The division also handles civil litigation related to wage and hour law, and public disclosure. This hybrid in-office position works in a collaborative environment to provide clerical support and limited legal support to LPD’s Paralegals and Assistant Attorneys General (AAG). Additionally, this position serves as the immigration main point of contact for the professional staff in the division and works closely with the Immigration AAG and Special Assistant Attorneys General (SAAG) hired to complete this work.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment
  • Two years of legal office experience
  • A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience
  • A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study

Responsibilities

  • Receive and screen clients and the public by phone and in person.
  • Assist with answers to basic or routine questions and direct them to the appropriate resource.
  • Monitor division's electronic mailbox for both litigation and non-litigation documents for Critical Event (CE) processing by the CE Reader.
  • Open and review and route incoming mail.
  • Following division procedures and AGO business rules, open new litigation and advice matters at the request of attorneys and paralegals, entering all basic case information into the Case Manager System (CMS) and Timekeeping.
  • Utilizing merge forms, generate Notice of Appearances during the case opening process and provide to the AAG for review, signature, and then file with the venue listed on the initiating document.
  • Review, manage, and assist the DOC Section Chief on DOC Discipline and Discrimination Complaint Letter assignments.
  • Act as a first reviewer of briefing for proofing and formatting with guidance by the assigned Paralegal on the case. This requires basic knowledge of court rules, styles manual, Blue Book, and formatting guidelines.
  • Provide backup services to paralegals and supervisor with various projects as needed or directed by supervisor, which could include photocopying, scanning, organizing, and assembling of legal documents, exhibits, and other materials for transmittal to attorneys, courts, and other legal staff.
  • Perform delivery/messenger services as directed by paralegals and/or a supervisor, such as serving and filing legal documents and obtaining signatures in order to meet critical deadlines.
  • Prepare and process vendor and immigration SAAG invoices and travel or expense vouchers in conformance with agency-established coding system following financial services and division procedures and OFM guidelines.
