Legal AI Engineer

Broadfield Law,

About The Position

Broadfield is a global law firm, in strategic partnership with SHP Legal Services, an Alvarez & Marsal affiliate. Founded in late 2024, the firm has expanded to serve the U.S., UK, Hong Kong, and Brazil, specializing in transactions and litigation. The firm's goal is to build a best-in-class legal operating system that enhances attorney work, improves client experience, and shapes competitive strategy in a rapidly evolving environment. This role is a foundational position for an AI builder, working directly with the Chair of the Innovation Committee and SHP Legal Services to rapidly develop and deploy AI tools for attorneys across transactional and litigation practices. The near-term focus is on encoding the firm's legal expertise into infrastructure and workflows that offer compounding value over time.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building with legal AI tools (Harvey, Legora, or equivalent) or LLM APIs (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, or equivalent).
  • Experience designing and implementing RAG pipelines, including chunking strategies, embedding models, and retrieval optimization.
  • Familiarity with workflow automation frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, or equivalent) for multi-step AI pipeline construction.
  • Ability to translate unstructured legal documents into structured, machine-readable knowledge assets.
  • Proficiency with prompt engineering at a production level, including system prompt architecture, guardrails, output schema design, and edge case handling.
  • Comfort working with APIs, JSON, Python, or equivalent scripting.
  • Demonstrated builder instinct, prioritizing adoption over shipped features.
  • Ability to balance speed and judgment, knowing when to prototype quickly and when to ensure accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of explaining technical concepts to both partners and machines.
  • A sense of ownership, treating the legal operations system as one's own.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within a law firm, legal tech company, or professional services firm.
  • Experience building AI-powered workflows.
  • Exposure to transactional or litigation workflows.
  • Familiarity with data privacy, privilege, and confidentiality considerations in AI deployment.
  • Exceptional recent graduates with genuine technical depth and a drive to build from day one.

Responsibilities

  • Map and structure the firm's playbooks, litigation frameworks, and due diligence processes into reusable knowledge assets.
  • Build custom workflows, particularly for document-intensive work across practices, including due diligence automation, playbook-based markup review, discovery analysis, case chronologies, and brief research.
  • Design the RAG architecture to ground AI outputs in the firm's proprietary precedents, deal data, and case materials.
  • Establish the prompt architecture library, guardrails, and quality standards for subsequent builds.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to define criteria for successful AI output.

Benefits

  • Eligibility for a discretionary bonus
