About The Position

The Legal Advocacy Liaison provides support and resources to members facing a myriad of legal issues, upon re-entry within society and the community. This role encourages self-advocacy and accountability by providing members with proper procedural guidelines and support in dealing with state and local agencies, and the court system. This role works in an advisory capacity to Re-Entry Specialists as they navigate various legal processes with the members. This position takes a proactive approach to understanding the legal needs and services of the re-entry population.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison between members and the courts, coordinating interviews, meetings, court appearances, and status updates.
  • Develops and implements member services that meet the needs of the agency through strategic partnerships with state and local government agencies. (i.e., probation, MVD, courts, etc.)
  • Advises members & staff on guidelines and procedures when interfacing with the courts and other state and local agencies.
  • Acts as a facilitator for helping to identify and connect members with community service opportunities.
  • Advises members and trains Re-Entry Specialists and/or Transitional Services staff on proper procedures as it relates to filing motions with the courts.
  • Advises members on proper procedures when submitting hardship requests, asking for fine and fee mitigation on civil and criminal case matters.
  • Drafts Supplemental Correspondence for members filing motions with the courts as it relates to program verification and compliance.
  • Keeps Advocacy Stats on member fines which have been waived, warrants quashed, community restitution awarded performed, etc.
  • Effectively completes same-day documentation in KIPU for member encounters.
  • Works with supervisory staff to make sure members attend needed substance abuse/counseling and Traffic Survival School appointments.
  • Creates accountability with staff and provides guidance with any/all necessary follow-through as needed, ensuring the fulfillment of tasks/responsibilities, such as 30-day and 60-day assessments, I-9 document deadlines, and updating Transitional Tracker information.
  • Works with undocumented members.
  • Provides training, support, and accountability to staff/teams on: Effective use of “MVDNOW” accounts, Reading compliance reports, to include order of importance and following MVD departmental procedures, Dealing with unique situations where there are unknown challenges and/or actions within the respective system/process.
  • Trains staff to effectively guide members in their approach to creating and addressing lower court motions, pertaining to past legal obligations to the courts (FTA’s, Non-payments to courts, pending or new charges, etc.).
  • Updates templates in KIPU/SharePoint that are used for motions, community service request approaches, quashing warrant(s), etc.
  • Makes sure staff remains within their scope of practice with members’ legal needs.
  • Optimizes billing potential for services being provided in assistance with members’ needs, and provides staff accountability and training for appropriately notating the respective services.
  • Assists in the development of effective communication between New Freedom and Legal Assistance/Counsel.
  • Acts as a point of contact for the Homeless ID project (Project ID), sends notifications of Project ID arrival to staff/teams, and trains staff/teams to work with Project ID as needed.
  • Acts as a point of contact for NFP community service responsibilities.
  • In addition, all other duties as assigned.
