About The Position

The Program of Social Sciences at California State University San Marcos accepts applications on an on-going basis throughout the 2026/27 academic year. The Social Sciences Major is an interdisciplinary program which aims to provide students with a broad understanding and appreciation of the perspectives offered by multiple social sciences disciplines on contemporary social issues. Students choose a Primary Field and two Secondary Fields from ten disciplines: anthropology, border studies, communication, geography, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, and women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Secondary Fields are chosen from these ten disciplines and other specified social sciences courses. Students have the option of designing an individualized Secondary Field. The Social Sciences Major is appropriate for students with career interests in human services and social work, education, counseling, business, and government. Students interested in the Social Sciences Major are encouraged to discuss their education and career objectives with the Social Sciences Program Director. Applicant pools are used to fill short-term temporary Lecturer positions across our campus with the possibility of rehiring. Appointments may last from one day to a whole semester. This applicant pool may be used to fill vacant positions on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications in this pool ad will only be good for the current academic year. This pool will be closed effective May 31st. If you wish to be considered for the next academic year, you will need to apply to the new pool as it becomes available by June 15th.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in a social science field (e.g., Anthropology, Border Studies, Communication, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies)
  • Expertise in a social science field
  • Experience teaching a social science field in higher education
  • Working in the State of California is a condition of employment

Nice To Haves

  • A doctorate or equivalent in a social science field (e.g., Anthropology, Border Studies, Communication, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies)
  • Experience teaching upper-division courses in a related social science field
  • Capacity to teach using interdisciplinary frameworks and/or perspectives
  • Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to serving our campus community as it relates to teaching and, as applicable, service.

Responsibilities

  • Teach short-term temporary Lecturer positions across campus.
  • Fill vacant positions on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year.
