About The Position

The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany is seeking applicants for a Lecturer in Game Design & Development (GDD). This position is within the Information Sciences & Technology Department. The lecturer will teach courses in game design and development, potentially covering areas such as game programming, technical art, game technology, the business of games, game studies, UI/UX for games, and game design. Responsibilities also include providing service to the University, advising students, facilitating interdisciplinary research projects, leading client-based projects, and assisting with co-curricular activities. The role is crucial in shaping the academic experience for students in the GDD major and minor, offering an opportunity for a dynamic educator and practitioner to contribute to an interdisciplinary curriculum. Ideal candidates will possess a strong foundation in game design through teaching or training and a vision for contributing to the GDD program.

Requirements

  • A MA, MS, MFA in Game Design & Development, Information Science, English, Animation, Computer Science, Engineering or Networking, or a closely related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by 8/20/2027.
  • Three or more years of academic teaching or professional training experience.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated experience with Unity, Unreal or other major game engine.
  • An ongoing professional practice which includes any of the following: game or play-related work, commercial or indie game development or game-related asset production / technical art.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
  • Demonstrated ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Nice To Haves

  • A terminal degree in Game design and development, Information Science, English, Animation, Computer Science, Engineering or Networking, or a closely related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Experience teaching graduate courses in game design & development such as game programming, game art, game technology, the business of games, game studies, and game design.
  • Demonstrated experience or teaching in multiple modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid).
  • One or more years working in the game design and development industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative, cross-disciplinary game design and/or development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in game design & development in one or more areas which may include but not limited to game programming, game art, game technology, the business of games, game studies, UI/UX for games, and game design.
  • Create engaging undergraduate curriculum in game design & development in one or more areas such as game programming, game art, game technology, the business of games, game studies, UI/UX for games, and game design.
  • Contribute to the development of curriculum of the GDD major/minor.
  • Provide regular office hours for individualized academic advising and student support for students in the GDD program, including course planning, degree progression, and referrals to university support services to address academic challenges.
  • Support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role in teaching, service, and building relationships within a diverse campus community.
  • Facilitate graduate/undergraduate interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Lead client-based projects.
  • Help lead co-curricular activities.
