About The Position

University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Languages, Linguistics, & Literature Department is seeking applications for the Japanese lecturer position. This is a temporary position for the lecturer pool beginning Fall 2026, subject to availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Classes may be offered online, evenings and/or weekends.

Requirements

  • Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Master’s degree in Japanese (language or literature); OR Master’s degree in Japanese as a Second Language; OR Master’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Japanese; OR Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language.
  • At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, or any combination thereof.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience at the community college level.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community college students.
  • Work experience related to the course to be taught.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively.
  • Familiarity with competency- and outcomes-based instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the assigned subject area.
  • Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress.
  • Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes.
  • Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations.
  • Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  • Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week).
