About The Position

The Department of Modern Languages in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Academic Professional Track (APT) faculty position in American Sign Language (ASL) at the rank of Lecturer. This is a teaching-focused position that combines undergraduate instruction and coordination of the American Sign Language program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued development of ASL at UTA, including the department’s Minor in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies, and will work collaboratively with faculty and departmental leadership to strengthen curriculum, student engagement, and opportunities for program growth. The preferred candidate will bring expertise in ASL instruction, knowledge of Deaf culture and communities, and demonstrated excellence in teaching. In accordance with USCIS regulations, successful applicants must be legally able to accept work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is considered on an exception-only basis and is not routinely available.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent terminal/professional qualification in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, ASL Education, Linguistics, Education, Interpreter Education, or a closely related field by the start date
• Demonstrated high-level proficiency in American Sign Language
• Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf communities
• Evidence of effective teaching and a commitment to student success
• Commitment to working collaboratively and contributing to the department as a team member

Nice To Haves

• Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, ASL Education, Linguistics, Education, Interpreter Education, or a closely related field
• Experience teaching ASL at the college/university level or in a comparable educational setting
• Experience coordinating an ASL program, language program, or multi-section instructional program
• Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students
• Expertise in ASL interpreting, interpreter education, or interpreter preparation

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in American Sign Language at multiple levels and, as appropriate, courses related to Deaf culture, ASL linguistics, interpreting, or other areas of expertise
• Maintain a teaching assignment equivalent to approximately 9–10 courses per academic year, depending on program coordination and other assigned responsibilities
• Coordinate the American Sign Language program
• Coordinate curriculum and course scheduling in consultation with the Department Chair and departmental staff
• Support consistency in curriculum, learning outcomes, assessment, and instructional practices across ASL course sections
• Mentor and support part-time and adjunct ASL instructors and facilitate communication and collaboration within the ASL program
• Support student recruitment, retention, and engagement initiatives related to the ASL program
• Contribute to departmental, college, and university service appropriate to an Academic Professional Track faculty appointment
