About The Position

Three Trails Behavioral Hospital in the area of Independence, MO is seeking a skilled and motivated Lead Therapist to provide both clinical leadership and direct patient care within our behavioral health programs. This role serves as a key member of the treatment team, supporting therapists, ensuring quality of care, and helping guide program development and clinical best practices. The ideal candidate is a strong clinician with leadership ability who is passionate about delivering high-quality behavioral health services. You will report to the Director of Clinical. The name Three Trails was selected to honor the historical significance of the city of Independence as the starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails. The logo icon is a compass, which is symbolic of wayfinding, and metaphorically the personal journey to recovery. The Groundbreaking for the new hospital was held in January 2025. Beam topping was held in July 2025. The facility is expected to open in the second half of 2026. Three Trails Behavioral Hospital will serve children and adolescents, adults and seniors with innovative and evidence-based inpatient behavioral healthcare focused on individual needs and comfort. It will create more than 200 new, full-time jobs including nurses, clinicians, therapists, technicians and administrative staff, when the facility is fully operational. It will be located at the intersection of I-70 and Little Blue Parkway, adjacent to the Children’s Mercy Hospital Outpatient Clinics. It will feature 120 licensed beds ready to meet the mental health needs of the surrounding community. It will span more than 88,000 square feet, and will include an activity yard and gym. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field required
  • Active licensure (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent) required
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of behavioral health or psychiatric experience required
  • Strong clinical assessment, crisis intervention, and documentation skills
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards

  • Previous lead, senior clinician, or supervisory experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual, group, and family therapy in accordance with treatment
  • Serve as a clinical leader and resource for the therapy team
  • Assist in supervising, mentoring, and supporting therapists and interns
  • Ensure timely and accurate clinical documentation and treatment planning
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary staff to coordinate comprehensive patient care
  • Support program development, group curriculum, and therapeutic interventions
  • Monitor quality and ensure compliance with Joint Commission, state, and UHSS standards
  • Participate in case reviews, treatment team meetings, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Assist leadership with workflow coordination and coverage needs
