Lead Test Engineer
About The Position
Leidos is seeking a Test Engineer to join the Air Traffic Business Area within the Homeland Sector, supporting development of the Leidos Common Automation Platform (L-CAP), a mission-critical automation platform built on a hybrid cloud data mesh architecture for next-generation air traffic management. The role applies an AI-first engineering mindset and modern development practices to improve delivery and software quality. It operates in a SAFe/Agile framework as part of an Agile Release Train delivering iterative value. The position supports government programs and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Public Trust investigation. It is hybrid for candidates within a commutable distance (less than one hour one-way in normal traffic) of Gaithersburg, Maryland; Eagan, Minnesota; or Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, with three days onsite and two days working from home. Candidates outside those commutable areas may be considered for a fully remote role.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline with at least 8 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with at least 6 years of experience; additional experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Strong experience with test automation frameworks such as Selenium, JUnit, pytest, or equivalent, and test development in Java or JavaScript.
- Expertise integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
- High experience with performance, integration, and API testing for distributed systems using tools such as JMeter or Gatling.
- Knowledge of distributed service testing, including service virtualization, contract testing, chaos engineering, and data-driven test automation.
- Experience with operational scenario-based testing, behavioral validation, root cause analysis, and defect investigation.
- Familiarity with Agile/SAFe testing, quality engineering principles, test management, and defect tracking tools.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Successful completion of background investigations as required by the government customer.
Nice To Haves
- Python scripting and test development proficiency.
- Experience testing microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Knowledge of containerized test environments such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with API testing frameworks such as REST Assured and Postman/Newman.
- Familiarity with security testing tools and practices.
- Experience in aviation, defense, or safety-critical testing domains.
- Knowledge of test-driven development (TDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD).
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools, such as code generation, automated testing, and intelligent debugging.
- Experience testing legacy-to-modern migration and verifying functional equivalence between old and new systems.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement test automation frameworks for microservices-based platform components.
- Build and maintain reusable test libraries and utilities for the L-CAP test infrastructure.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and establish continuous quality gates.
- Conduct performance testing to validate system behavior under load and stress conditions.
- Execute integration testing across platform services, APIs, and external system interfaces.
- Develop test plans and strategies aligned with sprint and Program Increment objectives.
- Analyze defect patterns and test metrics to identify quality trends and improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with development and systems engineering teams on testability and quality requirements.
- Support test environment configuration and test data management.
- Mentor junior test engineers on automation practices and testing methodologies.
- Design and execute test scenarios based on operational air traffic control workflows to ensure modernized services replicate legacy system behavior.
- Develop distributed service validation frameworks to verify inter-service communication, data flow, and performance under operational conditions.
- Implement data-driven verification approaches supporting modernization of legacy automation functions.
- Adopt AI-assisted development tools, automation, and modern engineering practices to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity.
