About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lead Summer Camp Counselor at YMCA of Natrona County maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, clean summer program site; ensuring a high level of program quality and working to establish a positive relationship with all program participants and their families. The Lead Summer Camp Counselor will provide a positive role model to youth within the philosophy of YMCA standards and expectations with an emphasis on youth development and healthy living. Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Ability to work the entire summer, June 1st to August 21st.
  • Previous experience working with children aged 5-12 years, preferably in a day camp setting
  • Ability to supervise and play with children in a pool setting is required
  • Must be willing to work outdoors
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games or art
  • Demonstrated leadership, dependability & flexibility in work hours
  • Integrity and ability to work independently with attention to detail required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Operation of 12-person passenger van for transportation purposes (18 and older only)
  • Complete within 30 days of hire: YMCA cause & culture training; Child Abuse Prevention Training, BLS CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervises assigned group of children.
  • Participate and encourage participation of all students in daily activities and events.
  • Supports Summer Camp Director in planning and implementation of program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness.
  • Actively participates in department and branch staff meetings and training.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
