About The Position

Performs duties operating a large semi-tractor trailer or roll-off truck and other motorized equipment and vehicles used in the transport of bulk solid waste material. Supervising and controlling assigned staff and resources to achieve unit/section objectives in the absence of Management. The Hillsborough County Solid Waste Department is seeking to hire a LEAD Solid Waste Transfer Equipment Operator to serve as a leader over the nighttime hauling team at the Northwest Transfer Station in Town N Country.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate
  • Three years of experience in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport and/or medium and heavy construction equipment, including front-end loaders or excavators
  • One year of which must have been in a supervisory or lead worker/team leader capacity
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A
  • Ability to pass a DOT/CDL physical examination annually
  • Knowledge of the operation of semi-tractor trailer transport, including medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles, including front-end loaders or excavators, and other motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations applicable to the operation of motorized construction, maintenance, and transport equipment on public streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment, standards and regulations, including Risk Managements accident/incident reporting procedures.
  • Skill in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport and other motorized equipment.
  • Ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, including medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively written and orally.
  • Ability to demonstrate good customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and understand work related material.

Responsibilities

  • Operates large semi-tractor trailer or roll-off motorized vehicles for the transportation of bulk solid waste material in constricted loading/unloading locations, on unimproved roads, and on heavily traveled roads and highways in compliance with all DOT and County safety rules and regulations.
  • Operates other heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, excavators, and skid steers to perform a variety of solid waste operational functions, including receiving waste, loading trailers, processing roll-off containers, and performing clean-up functions.
  • Operates hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical auxiliary equipment related to assigned tractors and trailers.
  • Checks and ensures that equipment is serviced and in good working condition; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and ensures that periodic maintenance and major repairs are performed.
  • Performs daily safety inspections and observes proper safety practices and regulations when operating or working around equipment.
  • Oversees the operation of the unit/section, coordinates, and administers assigned programs and resources as well as supervises operators, trades helpers, or laborers, in the absence of the assigned Supervisor or Manager.
  • Sets direction and priorities and allocates staff and resources to projects and unit initiatives, in the absence of the assigned Supervisor or Manager.
  • Responds to accidents/incidents both on site and remote, and properly filling out and submitting accident/incident reports per the County’s Risk Management guidelines, in the absence of the assigned Supervisor or Manager.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties in support of the unit's activities, to include accurate and timely end of shift updates, in the absence of the assigned Supervisor or Manager.
  • Uses manual tools to pick up litter at the facility and ensure proper disposal.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
