About The Position

Under the supervision of a Route Supervisor and/or Service Coordinator, the equipment operator is responsible for operating assigned solid waste trucks and equipment, which may include side loader, front loader, roll-off, brush truck, rear loader, knuckle boom, or other necessary trucks. The operator may also be indirectly responsible for supervising up to two other persons as assigned. The role involves operating equipment for automated collection/processing of solid waste, transporting it to transfer stations or landfills for unloading, and performing equipment inspections, cleaning (interior and exterior), and minor repairs. The operator must complete daily task reports, report unsafe conditions, and learn a minimum of three different routes within a specified timeframe. The work environment requires operating equipment year-round in varied weather and traffic conditions, including driving in heavy traffic and narrow alleys or streets. It also involves walking in challenging conditions like mud, snow, heavy dusts, and refuse with potentially hazardous materials. A basic understanding of hydraulic controls on solid waste trucks/equipment is expected.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and/or GED
  • Possession of a valid Texas CDL driver’s license, Class A or B
  • Ability to read maps, route printouts or instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers
  • Regular and punctual attendance
  • Ability to operate solid waste trucks and equipment, year-round, in varied weather and traffic conditions
  • Ability to drive in heavy traffic, and/or back in narrow alleys or streets
  • Basic understanding of the hydraulic controls on the solid waste trucks/equipment
  • Physically able to climb in and out of the side door to clean the compactor area of the trucks
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Required to finger, handle, walk, stand, hear, speak, see, and talk
  • Ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions

Responsibilities

  • Operates solid waste equipment on assigned route.
  • Drives in heavy traffic, narrow alleys or streets as required.
  • Performs automated collection/processing of solid waste.
  • Transports collected solid waste to the transfer station and/or Landfill for unloading.
  • Inspects, washes, keeps clean (interior and exterior), and performs minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Performs equipment inspections and completes inspection reports.
  • Completes daily task reports and reports all unsafe conditions to their supervisor.
  • Learns a minimum of three different routes within a specified amount of time.
  • Indirectly responsible for up to two other persons as assigned by the route supervisor.
