About The Position

The Boeing Company is hiring a Lead Software Systems Engineer for its SATCOM Mission Planning Software Engineering team in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The team develops software tools and services for advanced satellite and ground systems that support nuclear-survivable connectivity within the U.S. military’s nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) network. The role works in an Agile and CI/CD development environment with automated testing, vulnerability scanning, and quality scanning capabilities.

The engineer leads the development and maintenance of requirements, architecture, algorithms, interfaces, and designs for high-performance APIs connecting front-end and back-end services. The role leads software development activities and critical feature delivery across the full development lifecycle, from design through deployment, and builds, architects, and consumes APIs and backend services with emphasis on automation, testing, and security. It also leads code reviews and the creation of functional user interfaces from design mockups, advocates for product quality, security, and performance improvements, and provides mentoring and leadership while working effectively in ambiguous environments.

The position is expected to be 100% onsite at a listed location option. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time. An active U.S. Secret Security Clearance is required; a clearance active within the past 24 months is considered active. U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance, and the position must meet U.S. export control requirements requiring a U.S. Person. The employer will not sponsor employment visas. Candidates must complete a technical assessment as part of the selection process and satisfy the company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher.
• At least 5 years of software development experience for space systems and ground segments performing command, control, mission planning, and data processing.
• At least 5 years of development experience using Python.
• At least 3 years of experience with JavaScript, such as Angular or JQuery.
• Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance; a clearance active within the past 24 months is considered active. U.S. citizenship is required for the clearance.
• Ability to meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person.
• Completion of the required technical assessment as part of the selection process.
• Satisfaction of the Company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science and at least 9 years of related work experience; or a bachelor’s degree and at least 13 years of directly related work experience; or at least 17 years of related, relevant experience.
• At least 3 years of experience working with TypeScript.
• At least 5 years of progressive software development leadership experience using modern methodologies on government programs.
• At least 5 years of experience designing and developing intuitive user interfaces featuring real-time, 2D/3D geospatial visualization.
• At least 5 years of software development lifecycle experience, including requirements analysis, design, coding, integration, and test.
• At least 5 years of experience with database technologies such as Postgres and SQL/NoSQL.
• At least 3 years of experience with Java and FastAPI (Python API) languages.
• In-depth knowledge of Command and Control (C2) systems, mission planning, ground systems, and real-time application requirements.
• Strong experience using CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, builds, and deployment workflows.

Responsibilities

• Lead, develop, and maintain requirements, architecture, algorithms, interfaces, and designs for high-performance APIs between front-end and back-end software services.
• Lead software development activities in an Agile environment using DevSecOps methodologies, including integration of completed components into a fully functional software system.
• Lead development of critical features and own the full development lifecycle from design through deployment.
• Build, architect, and consume APIs and backend services, emphasizing automation, testing, and security.
• Lead code reviews to maintain code quality, enforce best practices, and ensure compliance with established standards.
• Lead the translation of design mockups into functional, visually appealing user interfaces using modern front-end frameworks and technologies.
• Advocate for product quality, security, and performance improvements that positively affect the team and broader organization.
• Work effectively in ambiguous environments, mentor and lead team members, and self-direct work as needed.
