About The Position

Carousell is seeking a hands-on engineer and technical leader to build user-focused products backed by scalable systems and effective architecture. The Lead Software Engineer will provide technical leadership for the Core Marketplace team, whose products help merchants and power sellers succeed through visibility products and marketing, merchandising, and operations tools. The team also builds buyer and seller experiences for specialized, high-value categories. These products account for the majority of Carousell’s revenue.

The role combines technical direction and implementation: leading complex cross-team projects, making and communicating architecture decisions, contributing to designs and code, and improving systems, processes, code quality, and developer productivity. The engineer will work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers across platforms and domains, collaborate with senior technical leaders on organization-wide choices, mentor engineers, and develop product and business knowledge to deliver useful features.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of software development experience.
• At least 2 years of product development experience as a Lead Engineer or in an equivalent technical leadership role.
• Experience serving as a technical lead across multiple engineering teams.
• A track record of building scalable systems.
• Experience with microservices and exposure to highly available, web-scale systems.
• Strong computer science foundation and practical software development, architecture, and design experience.
• Excellent knowledge of distributed systems concepts, problems, and solution patterns.
• Knowledge of modern technology stacks.
• Strong hands-on programming skills in Go, Python, or Java.
• Deep knowledge of open-source and cloud-native software.
• Strong knowledge of storage technologies, including databases such as Postgres, key-value stores such as Cassandra, caching systems such as Redis, and search engines such as Elasticsearch.

• High integrity and ability to collaborate positively.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead large, complex, cross-team technical projects.
• Evaluate technology and architecture choices, communicate trade-offs, and make decisions within the role’s domains.
• Contribute to high- and low-level design and write code.
• Model and encourage effective software-building practices for other engineers.
• Work with product managers, designers, and engineers across platforms and domains.
• Collaborate with principal and senior engineers on organization-wide platform, process, and technology choices.
• Initiate and lead technical projects and process changes to improve codebase and system quality, reduce technical debt, and increase developer productivity.
• Mentor engineers and share technical knowledge, industry best practices, and leadership skills.
• Build product and business domain knowledge in paying-user and vertical domains and use it to develop features for users.
