Lead Software Engineer – Enterprise Observability

Humana•Tampa, FL
•$129,300 - $177,800•Remote

About The Position

The Enterprise Observability Engineering team builds intelligent, scalable, and resilient observability solutions. The Lead Software Engineer will design, implement, and evolve observability and logging platforms, lead enterprise-scale initiatives, mentor engineers, and collaborate across disciplines to keep systems reliable, scalable, and performant. The role calls for deep hands-on expertise in logging and observability engineering, including OpenTelemetry principles, log ingestion, and event correlation across distributed systems. The approach should be platform-agnostic, selecting resilient and scalable solutions suited to the environment; familiarity with Splunk or Dynatrace is a plus. The engineer will work closely with SRE, Security, Networking, Platform Engineering, and Data Science teams to advance the observability strategy using AI/ML and cloud-native technologies. The position is remote, but the candidate must live within a commutable distance of a designated IT location: Louisville, Kentucky; Tampa or Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Dallas, Texas; or Washington, D.C. Occasional travel to Humana offices for training or meetings may be required. The role is scheduled for 40 hours per week. A dedicated home workspace that protects member PHI/HIPAA information is required, along with internet service of at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of software or infrastructure engineering experience with an observability/logging focus.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on observability design and solution engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on AI development experience, contributing to building AI solutions; AI observability is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience developing data logging solutions.
  • At least 2 years of automation experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience maturing or scaling observability.
  • Strong foundation in operating systems, networking, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Agile delivery experience and strategic thinking about observability maturity.
  • Expertise with Splunk Cloud Enterprise and ES, including SPL, dashboards, correlation searches, and data models.
  • Experience with scaled and complex data onboarding, including HEC, UF, and TA development.
  • Experience integrating with SNOW, SOAR, and ITSM/SecOps tools.
  • Experience designing observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies.
  • Ability to engineer solutions for cost optimization.
  • Experience with automation and continuous delivery practices.
  • Experience leading cross-functional programs across technologies.
  • Must live within a commutable distance of one of the designated IT locations: Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Dallas, TX; or Washington, D.C.
  • For home work, provide internet service with at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, and work from a dedicated space that protects member PHI/HIPAA information.
