About The Position

Humana is seeking an expert Lead Software Engineer to design, build, and evolve enterprise observability and logging platforms. The role focuses on observability engineering, including OpenTelemetry principles, log ingestion, and event correlation across distributed systems. Candidates should be able to design resilient and scalable logging solutions using platform-agnostic approaches; experience with Splunk or Dynatrace is a plus. The Lead Software Engineer will drive enterprise-scale initiatives, provide technical leadership and mentorship, and collaborate with SRE, Security, Networking, Platform Engineering, and Data Science teams. The work includes evolving observability strategy with AI/ML and cloud-native technologies, building AI-native tools for autonomous issue detection and resolution, and ensuring systems are reliable, scalable, and performant. This is a remote position, but candidates must live within a commutable distance of a designated IT location: Louisville, Kentucky; Tampa or Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Dallas, Texas; or Washington, D.C. Occasional travel to Humana offices for training or meetings may be required. Employees working from home must have internet service with at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, and a dedicated workspace that protects member PHI/HIPAA information. The scheduled workweek is 40 hours.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of software or infrastructure engineering experience with an observability or logging focus.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on observability design and solution engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on AI development experience as a contributor building AI solutions; AI observability is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience developing data logging solutions.
  • At least 2 years of automation experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience maturing or scaling observability.
  • Strong foundation in operating systems, networking, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Agile delivery experience and strategic thinking about observability maturity.
  • Expertise with Splunk Cloud Enterprise and Enterprise Security, including SPL, dashboards, correlation searches, and data models.
  • Experience with scaled, complex data onboarding, including HEC, UF, and TA development.
  • Experience integrating with ServiceNow (SNOW), SOAR, ITSM, or SecOps tools.
  • Experience designing observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies.
  • Experience engineering solutions for cost optimization.
  • Experience with automation and continuous delivery practices.
  • Experience leading cross-functional programs across technologies.
  • Must live within a commutable distance of Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Dallas, TX; or Washington, D.C.
  • For home work, must have internet service with a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps and upload speed of 10 Mbps, and a dedicated workspace that protects member PHI/HIPAA information.
