Lead Software Engineer (Platform Engineering)

State Farm•Dunwoody, GA
•Hybrid

About The Position

State Farm’s Platform Engineering team is rebuilding its Source Code Management developer platform as a Kubernetes-native, GitOps-first Internal Developer Platform. The team is moving away from VM- and configuration-management-based infrastructure, establishing a GitHub SaaS footprint, migrating engineering teams from on-premises GitLab, and automating GitHub organizational state through Kubernetes-managed resources and custom Go controllers. The role leads through hands-on engineering and helps design the platform, improve the end-to-end developer experience, and establish software engineering practices that enable product teams to deliver features. The engineer owns work end to end, collaborates through code reviews and pairing, and helps shape the platform’s technical direction based on feedback from its users. The position is based at one of the listed State Farm facilities and uses a hybrid arrangement. For Enterprise Technology, the arrangement requires approximately 40% in-office time each month, beginning in late 2027. Applicants must be eligible to work lawfully in the U.S. immediately; State Farm will not sponsor U.S. work authorization for this opportunity.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building a substantial project in Go, such as a CLI, Kubernetes controller or operator, or API service, and understanding of Go idioms and best practices.
  • Understanding of Kubernetes Resource Model concepts, including CRDs, controllers, reconciliation loops, RBAC, and admission webhooks.
  • Hands-on Crossplane experience with Compositions, XRDs, Managed Resources, and Providers, or strong Kubernetes operator experience and willingness to learn Crossplane.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GitHub Enterprise Cloud administration, GitHub Apps, REST or GraphQL API automation, and Git workflows and branching strategies.
  • GitLab administration or API automation experience, or experience migrating repositories and teams between source control platforms at scale.
  • Experience with Red Hat OpenShift patterns and deploying workloads on managed Kubernetes.
  • AWS experience with API Gateway, Lambda, ECS/Fargate, IAM, S3, Secrets Manager, or VPC networking.
  • Experience with Argo CD, Flux, or similar deployment and GitOps tooling, and a desired-state and reconciliation mindset.
  • Experience with structured logging, metrics, distributed traces, Dynatrace, OpenTelemetry, or Grafana.
  • Experience designing RESTful or GraphQL APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build Kubernetes-native automation in Go, including custom controllers and Crossplane compositions that manage GitHub organizational resources, repositories, teams, rulesets, and enterprise settings as declarative, reconciled state.
  • Own the GitHub SaaS platform, including organizational governance, enterprise policy enforcement, GitHub Apps, and GitHub Hosted Actions Compute.
  • Design and build automated tooling to migrate repositories, access, and settings from on-premises GitLab to GitHub Enterprise Cloud at scale, and partner with engineering teams to minimize disruption during migration.
  • Promote platform adoption by building tooling, guides, and automation that help teams onboard and adapt branching strategies, deployment patterns, and applications to the new model.
  • Help make platform state versioned, reconciled, and auditable through GitOps practices.
  • Collaborate with teammates, communicate effectively, take ownership, and improve the developer experience of platform users.
