About The Position

The Lead Restaurant Steward is responsible for overseeing the cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of the restaurant's kitchen and dishwashing operations. This role leads the stewarding team, sets the standard for cleanliness and efficiency, and acts as the primary point of coordination between stewards and kitchen leadership during each shift.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a stewarding, dishwashing, or kitchen support role required; supervisory experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with kitchen and front-of-house staff
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in hot, wet conditions
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by restaurant operations
  • Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation standards (ServSafe certification a plus)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily stewarding operations, including dishwashing, pot washing, and kitchen sanitation
  • Train, schedule, and provide guidance to stewarding staff, including seasonal and J1 employees
  • Ensure all dishware, glassware, utensils, and kitchen equipment are cleaned, sanitized, and stored properly according to health code standards
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, walls, drains, and equipment throughout and at the close of each shift
  • Manage trash and recycling removal, including proper disposal procedures
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and chemicals; place orders or alert management when supplies are low
  • Ensure compliance with all local health department and food safety regulations
  • Communicate with Chefs and kitchen management regarding staffing needs, equipment issues, or workflow bottlenecks
  • Assist in end-of-shift closing procedures, ensuring the kitchen is fully cleaned and set up for the next shift
  • Step in to assist with steward duties directly during high-volume periods or staff shortages
  • Help onboard and mentor new stewards, including international staff, to ensure understanding of expectations and procedures
  • Report maintenance issues (e.g., dish machines, plumbing) to appropriate personnel promptly
  • Promote a safe working environment, including proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment
