Under minimal supervision, the Lead Research Specialist performs specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures, using independent judgment to apply or adapt scientific techniques. The role may assist with protocol design and propose alternative experimental procedures for a principal investigator. It also involves planning and scheduling research procedures, analyzing and interpreting study results, and training others in laboratory techniques and equipment use. The specialist calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains equipment; reviews and compiles literature on related research developments and techniques; monitors laboratory processes for quality assurance; and records, compiles, and analyzes study data, preparing charts and graphs. The role also monitors the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances. Employees may need to work with potentially hazardous agents and take specific precautions and/or receive immunizations. Tasks are generally performed in person at an Emory University location. Remote work-from-home days may be granted at department discretion, and Emory may change remote-work status with notice.
