Lead, Project Engineering

L3Harris Technologies•Palm Bay, FL

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a technical leader to drive the design, development, and production of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) solutions. The role supports the definition, design, development, integration, and testing of electro-optic systems for airborne and ground imaging surveillance systems. It combines programmatic and technical responsibilities, with challenging timelines and a focus on delivering innovative solutions within schedule and budget constraints. The position leads cross-functional engineering teams, coordinates work across engineering disciplines, and supports system design, integration, verification, and validation. It also contributes to project planning, capacity planning, business development, and the creation and maintenance of engineering documentation. The role represents the engineering organization internally and externally and requires clear communication with technical and non-technical personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 9 years of prior relevant experience; or a graduate degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing engineering projects.
  • Broad knowledge of risk management tools and techniques.
  • Skilled knowledge of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
  • Understanding of electro-optical/infrared system design and development and associated opto-mechanical technology.
  • Experience with electrical, optical, mechanical, software, and systems engineering.
  • Experience in front-end concept development for new products.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering, digital engineering, and agile development.
  • Experience in system-level performance analysis, such as image, thermal, structural, end-to-end performance, or reliability analysis.
  • Experience with hardware/software design, integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Project engineering or program management experience with aerospace products and multi-site development teams.
  • Understanding of defense products and platforms.
  • A track record of managing diverse and distributed personnel developing complex technology.
  • Knowledge of digital engineering and modeling techniques, including how they benefit program execution.
  • Understanding of agile development environments and ability to work across multi-site development teams.
  • Successful product and systems development experience involving complex systems such as optics, detector arrays, digital video, processing electronics, pointing, stabilization, and control algorithms.
  • Direct contribution to technical solutions integrating multiple disciplines or technologies into differentiated system architectures, with understanding of competitive solutions, key performance indicators, end-user mission objectives, and the interplay between technologies and engineering design.
  • Understanding of technical and market roadmaps to drive department capability growth plans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead one or more cross-functional teams, typically consisting of 4–10 members.
  • Deliver to program cost and schedule goals.
  • Plan and request team members in support of current and projected programs.
  • Help define total systems design, technology, and processes to meet mission requirements.
  • Coordinate across functional engineering areas to design, develop, and test products, and resolve compatibility and interface problems across subsystems.
  • Perform project capacity planning in conjunction with other project leaders and functional managers.
  • Utilize department capabilities such as simulation, modeling, design, agile development, integration, and test.
  • Support business development activities, including bid and proposal cost and schedule generation.
  • Evaluate performance measures and ensure system requirements are met.
  • Perform subsystem integration, technical risk assessment, technical planning, verification and validation, and supportability analyses.
  • Understand, implement, and audit engineering processes on programs and projects.
  • Create and update engineering documents, including processes, specifications, reports, plans, technical memos, and presentations.
  • Represent the engineering organization internally and externally.
  • Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical personnel.
