Lead Product Designer

US MobileNew York, NY
$180,000 - $230,000

About The Position

US Mobile is building the future of wireless communication with the goal of one unified network open to any person and any device, worldwide. They are empowering customers by offering all three major networks on one phone and one plan, plus home internet from Starlink, with no lock-in or commitments. They provide custom-fit plans at every price point and 24/7 customer support with real people. The company actively uses real-time feedback from Reddit, surveys, and customer support to inform product roadmaps. Consumer Reports has named them the top-rated mobile carrier two years in a row. US Mobile is also building innovative systems that scale, including a network-agnostic tech stack and agile, cross-functional teams built on trust and mutual respect. This role is for individuals who work fast, flexibly, and collaboratively without compromising standards. We're looking for a seasoned design leader to set the strategic direction for our design practice, elevate our craft and culture, and shape how design shows up across the company. This is a Lead IC position focused on influencing through vision, judgment, and mentorship, rather than traditional people management. You will partner directly with product, engineering, and executive leadership to define the future of design within the company and elevate the team by setting standards, coaching others, and representing design in strategic decision-making.

Requirements

  • 10+ years experience as a Product Designer, including significant time operating at a senior/staff/lead level in fast-paced environments.
  • Deep experience in consumer facing technology, fintech, or platform products, with a portfolio that shows range across strategic and executional work.
  • A demonstrated ability to make and defend strategic design decisions — balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints — and to influence roadmap and prioritization conversations at the leadership level.
  • A strong, well-articulated point of view on design quality, backed by research, data, and experience, along with the ability to teach that point of view to others.
  • Proven experience mentoring, guiding, or informally leading other designers — through critique, pairing, career conversations, or setting team-wide standards.
  • Craft user-friendly, delightful experiences with an exceptionally high bar for visual polish, information architecture, and cognitive load.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity — able to bring structure and strategic clarity to 0-to-1 problems with incomplete information.
  • Autonomously ship features from 0 to 1 with a high bar for IA, UX, UI, and final visuals, while also stepping back to ensure the broader system stays coherent.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills — able to represent design's perspective persuasively in front of executives, PMs, and engineering leads.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ YOE in consumer tech, ideally with time at both high-growth startups and larger, more mature orgs, a track record of shipping ambitious work at scale, and a well-formed point of view on what great design organizations look like — and how to build one.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design vision, execution and strategy across all user-facing surfaces, including rebrands and redesigns
  • Own the end-to-end experience and vision for a new desktop web app (rebranded components, UX upgrades)
  • Set the design direction in partnership with brand and marketing for new marketing pages (rebranded components, IA, UX upgrades)
  • Define the rituals, review processes, and culture that increase the velocity and quality of the design team.
  • Be the standard-bearer for mindful, high-craft EPD collaboration — modeling and teaching it to others.
  • Partner with product and executive leadership to define design's role in company strategy, not just execute against a roadmap handed to you. Weigh in on what we build, not only how.
  • Be a recognized point of view within the org (and ideally externally) on design quality, systems thinking, and product craft. Set direction on design principles and standards that outlast any single project.
  • Actively coach other designers, giving thoughtful critique, unblocking their thinking, and helping them grow their judgment — not just their output. Be the person others go to when a design problem is genuinely hard.
  • Lead the definition of new components and the redesigned app experience across Mobile.
  • Own and guide a new design system (web, mobile, marketing) post-rebrand, and establish the governance model for how it evolves.

Benefits

  • Annual Offsite to hack & meet the team. 2024 Japan. 2025 Hawaii.
  • Competitive Salary
  • Gym reimbursement
  • Commute reimbursement
  • Flexible working hours
  • Professional development stipend
  • Flexible time off
  • Cell phone service (up to $100/mo)
